Im thinking religion is one of the things he hates about humanity. He sees Sunday as an evil entity, a soul sucking one. A dishonest man who lies to people, he obviously sees a lot of himself in Sunday. And Plainview probably sees Sundays followers as superstitious ignorants. But in reality he sees everyone as a threat, he sees the guy who says is his brother and suddenly realizes who he isnt, and sees him as a threat. Suddenly his own son HW becomes a threat as well. He just hates everyone, he is the kind of person who feels the only one he can trust is himself. So Id say that part of his goal as well is to get away from all that and become a recluse. He is happiest alone, by himself. Which is exactly the way that he ends up. Living in a gigantic mansion all by himself. Old and alone. i.e. control Control over who and what is in his life. Control over how they work in his life. Control over their access and to what level in his life. Donald Trump has boatloads of money, which he controls which means he does not have to compromise with people to get what he wants because he can get it without them, unless he wants more than that. Being #1 means you can do whatever you want. Being rich means you can do whatever you want... all within the law of course. . . but then the law can be overcome with money, just ask OJ. Money and riches is a way to exert control and thereby achieve a goal. For an anti-social like Plainview that goal is isolation and the control to keep things that way. This is also why people like this are atheists. There is no way they will agree with the notion that there is an aspect of their life that is beyond their control and in the hands of someone they themselves can't control. Which is probably why he hates the people and Eli so much. Not only do they believe in the foolish notion that there is an aspect of their lives that is beyond their control, but they give up that control to, not just God, but to Eli Sunday, who is just as greedy and duplicitous as Plainview, and yet they give that control to Eli and not to him to exploit. |
