| Perfect Creature This reminded me of Equilibrium. Not for its subject matter, but for its treatment by its parent studio(s). Apparently dumped in an anonymous bin somewhere like an unwanted infant after prom night, then released into the world with nary a bit of buzz in sight aside from horror havens... well, you'd expect the Anti-Christ, when this movie is anything but. What it is is an original take on the vampire legend, adding a fresh layer of mythological depth to a done-to-death movie monster and creates an entirely new, alternate world that lives and breathes as its own social, political, religious and noir-ish entity. I was really impressed with its unique twist on traditional mythos, making the vampires a brotherhood or church of sorts that protect humanity, and Dougray Scott's low-key and brooding performance is the - pardon the pun - perfect anchor to a solid gothic tale. I only wish it had been a little longer to fully develop its ideas. As is, it isn't a masterpiece, but I'd be interested to see a sequel to find out where they'd go with the story, as there's plenty left to cull, IMO. -> 7/10 |
